Can AI Crawlers Read JavaScript? SSR, CSR and AI Visibility

Most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. Learn what that breaks, how to test what bots see, and how SSR, SSG and prerendering keep your content AI-visible.

You'll be able to

  • ✓Explain which AI crawlers render JavaScript and which read only raw HTML
  • ✓Test what a non-rendering crawler sees on your key pages
  • ✓Choose a rendering fix (SSR, SSG, prerendering) that fits your stack
  • ✓Find status-code and redirect problems that waste AI crawler visits

The short answer

Mostly no. Vercel's crawler study found that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot do not execute JavaScript. They read the initial HTML only. Googlebot (which also serves Gemini) and Applebot do render. If your key content appears only after client-side JavaScript runs, most AI search bots can't see it. Server-render it.
